I discovered earthing quite recently when exploring possibilities of self-soothing and self-healing in the coronavirus-imposed confinement. My body and soul cried for connection with nature. So I would walk and sit in the garden. Yet it didn’t feel enough. And then, one afternoon, I came across the name Clint Ober. The next morning I set off on an hour-long walk in the forest starting behind my Ibiza home. But this time - barefoot. It felt wonderful. The walk became my daily routine, and no splinter in my heel nor pouring rain over my head would stop me from doing it for months. Why did I find it so appealing? Is earthing just a fad? And where does it come from?

Where are you now, reading this post? Are you commuting? Having a break from house chores? In an online meeting, mic on mute? Do you feel relaxed or distracted? Is your body tense or at ease? Can you hear the sounds around you? Do you notice how your thoughts arise? Are you mindful?

Mindfulness has become such a popular word that you can find it everywhere, from schools, hospitals, businesses, and retreat centres to glossy magazines. Does mindfulness involve ‘emptying’ the mind? Does it include taking naps? Do you go into trance when you’re being mindful? There seems to be quite a lot of confusion around the concept of mindfullness. So what does it mean, and where does it come from?

Our strength, resilience and emotional stability come from the state of being grounded. It is the place of being present, open and non-judgmental to any experience. So how do we become grounded? And how do we stay this way?

I woke up this morning to the sounds of birds chirping and to the faint smell of lavender brought by the light breeze through the open window. I took a deep breath; I made a long stretch; I placed a long gaze at the palm trees in front of my house. And then my alert mind reminded me of the “reality”: the instability of the outside world, the uncertainty of the future, the invisible threat lurking around. Only a few months ago, it was much easier to have a view on how the world works. Now nothing is certain. I don’t know what is right. I don’t know how I should act. I don’t know if I can plan anything or what the outcome of my action will be. I got carried away by the phantasies, “what ifs”, I started noticing anxiety...
